For a perfect print, the ground cant be too hard or too soft. The consistency of the ground influences the shape, size and depth of the track and any associated underprints. The SP is nice, but if you want to hike to the highest point in Oklahoma, you have to hike Black Mesa. Black Mesa is a couple of miles to the west, on Nature Conservancy land. You may be aware of this, but Black Mesa, strangely enough, is not located within Black Mesa State Park. However, for tracks to form and preserve, conditions must be just right. In fact, I'm pretty sure we have hiked there after 5 pm. Even though you will be climbing the plateau directly in front of you, there is a lower ledge that prevents you from climbing straight up it. A dinosaur could leave innumerable footprints, but only one skeleton. To get there, you will need to follow the trail to get near the base of the plateau, then go left for a little bit to find the route that allows you to climb up. Your objective is to climb on the top of the plateau behind the porta-potty. It wasn’t fun.Īs soon as you leave the parking lot, you will notice that there is a network of trails that seem to head off in different directions. I made the mistake of underestimating this hike and wore my gym shoes. They were first discovered in the 1980’s and today about 1/3 of the initial footprints are still visible. You can see the footprints that are preserved in sandstone next to the Carrizo Creek. Even though this trail is short, it is steep with tons of loose gravel that can be super slippery, especially going back down. In fact, we weren’t really sure if we were in the right spot at first until saw a hiker coming down the mountain. Dinosaur Tracks is an unofficial trail so there are no signages whatsoever.
